Back in 1952, the community around Delaware,
Ohio was mostly agricultural, so to meet the equipment needs of the many farmers in the
area, Larry Larcom, and Charlie Mitchell formed Larcom & Mitchell Co., a farm
implement dealership. They sold Allis Chalmers, New Idea and New Holland dairy and
barn equipment, which they serviced in the shop behind their storefront. The dealership would prosper for several
years, but Charlie, who was also farming over a thousand acres, had other ideas.
He'd always been fascinated by horse racing,
having grown up only a short distance from the home of the famous "Little Brown
Jug", in Delaware.
So back in the shop behind the implement
dealership, Charlie began designing and building specialized equipment to condition the
horse race track surface, and in December of 1978, Larcom & Mitchell delivered their
first piece of that equipment.
Three years later, Charlie gave up farming,
and closed the implement dealership as well, so he could concentrate on the business of
producing the very best race track conditioning equipment he could possibly build.
Larry Larcom and Charlie Mitchell took their
commitment to quality so seriously, some of the original equipment they built is still
working, like the triangle harrow used regularly at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.
Today, with his office located only a few
paces from the 8000 square foot manufacturing facility, Charlie maintains a hands-on
involvement in each step of the design and building process. But that level of
personal involvement doesn't end at the shipping dock.
Because Charlie wants each customer to get
off on the right foot with their new purchase, he will usually travel to the customer, to
insure that they understand every detail of their new Larcom & Mitchell equipment.
Today, Larcom & Mitchell is known around
the globe, including the United States, Canada and Europe for excellent design and high
quality manufacturing.
It's been a long time since Charlie Mitchell
and Larry Larcom teamed up to sell farm equipment under the Larcom & Mitchell name.
But that old fashioned commitment to doing things right the first time is as
evident today as it was way back then.
